Yet God is tenacious when it comes to His glory. Whatever we try to do to replace it, He will use to amplify it even more. No matter how crazy the plot line of our sinful choices, God twists our turns into an occasion to show that He is better still.

If God is not an egotist, what does that make Him? According to the book of James, He is the giver of “every good and perfect gift … coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights.”9 That’s exactly what happened when God gave Himself in the person of Jesus Christ. Except that on an eternal scale, Christ was the good and perfect gift, God’s glory embodied for the world to see, God’s shout to awaken us from sinful slumber to look into His face.

If God is going to give us what is good and perfect, He must keep the spotlight on Himself. Thus God is determined that the Story remain about Him, ultimately concluding with the unending applause of heaven. His purposed preoccupation with His glory is a river no one can tame, a sovereign tide that overwhelms all our foolish pride. As He did with Pharaoh, so God will even use the greatest arrogance in human beings to amplify His glory, ensuring in the end that every life and every tongue affirms His fame.10

To joyfully choose to make our lives count for His renown is to join His cause and to get on board with what He is already doing with or without us. That way we make sure our lives count for what matters most while enjoying for all time the very best God has to offer.
